MERRA2/GFS Case studies for WRF forecasts

We have looked at shortwave (SW) radiation errors in the MERRA2 and ERA-Interim reanalysis datasets compared with seven stations around Ireland: Belmullet, Birr, Clones, Dublin, Kilkenny, Malin Head and Valentia.

We want to run WRF forecasts for certain case study dates. We will use archived GFS global forecast data to drive WRF forecasts for these dates. GFS archive data are available to download for dates from 2005 (see this earlier post), while some obs data stop in 2008, so we must choose within those years.

We have used MERRA2 error scores to select the case study dates, as we will be using GFS to drive the forecasts. For each station, we made a list of days with the 10 largest positive/negative errors in daily SW radiation (7 x (10+10) = 140 events). Dates common to the highest number of stations were selected:

Date Error Num. Stations
2007-06-17 3879 4 (#1 Birr)
2005-05-23 -2153 4
2005-06-17 3899 3
2005-07-03 -2664 3 (#1 Belmullet)

We also chose some individual large error events:

Date Av. Error Station
2007-06-03 -5085 Malin Head
2009-05-28 5144 Valentia

Station info:

Name Latitude Longitude Elevation
Belmullet 54.228 -10.007 9
Birr 53.09 -7.89 72
Clones 54.183 -7.233 89
Dublin 53.428 -6.241 71
Kilkenny 52.665 -7.269 65
Malin Head 55.372 -7.339 22
